CTS Courses Take Flight
Feb 03, 2014
PAA’s second semester course list includes “Aviation 25” for credit. Alberta’s academic curricula is supplemented by Career and Technology Studies, which allow students to select and train in programs of choice. Though each high school may offer different electives, Alberta Education outlines over 1000 courses that train in 28 various occupations. As of January 2014, PAA is the only Adventist school in Canada offering the training and experience of Aviation.
This one semester course is provided in partnership with Absolute Aviation, the respected Wetaskiwin Air Flight School. Instructor Ron Dungen will combine the physics of flight with the practical application of aviation in six modules that comprise 20 of the 40 hours needed for ground school in pursuit of a private pilot’s license.
Students will become certified and receive their radio license upon successfully completing coursework and passing a written exam. Dungen will also incorporate on-the-ground training allowing students to visit the Edmonton International Airport as well as use their newly acquired skills to create a flight plan later in the semester.
Vice-Principal, Rod Jamieson, is proud of PAA’s expanded program particularly this new addition, which has been in the works since April 2013. He says, “It provides a more varied opportunity for students in classes and provides a greater number of options for career choices.”
PAA’s students agree. Jordan Dubyna hopes to work for the government after graduation and is taking Aviation to diversify his skill set. Veronica Barnes enrolled in the course on Mr. Jamieson’s recommendation and is looking to build character along with knowledge. They are two of the 10 students signed up for this pilot Aviation class.
Aviation is just one of many courses offered by PAA to engage students and enhance opportunities on the hilltop. It belongs to the same curricular grouping as Foods, Mechanics, Art, Welding, Digital Photography, Driver Ed., and Video Production, in addition to ten other popular and successful school programs. It is part of PAA’s long-term goal to add more elective options and provide students with a unique and uniquely Christian educational high school experience.
